When did girls start getting pregnant by basking on the sun?

Trickle-down feminism,” a notion that rights and privileges enjoyed by an elite group of women will trickle down and benefit the majority of women, is wholly ineffective in promoting positive social change. It should be replaced by the principles of equalism, a belief in the value and responsibility of all people, (View of a Case of Trickle-Down Feminism, n.d.) in layman language this is what I call under the Air con (A.C) conversations aimed at preserving the status quo. Over the year’s elitist women and men have come up with different propositions on how to address different communal dysfunctions. However, some of the propositions defy the natural laws of existence within communities.

Allow me to give on example that has recently flummoxed me. I have keenly followed the rising cases of teenage pregnancies in Meru County and other counties in Kenya. Sat in different webinars and meetings with the “Experts’ and Mr. and Mrs know it all’s. And since we have a new “buzz word” A.K.A ‘the Girl Centred Approach’. We have to throw it into all conversations. Do we also need ‘the boy Centred approach‘ or do we make it ‘the Teens Centred approach‘. This leaves me wondering, ‘when did girls start getting pregnant by basking on the sun’. To my knowledge girls are made pregnant by their peers who are boys or deviant men who prey on them. If we do only girl centred approach to teen pregnancies, at what point will address perpetrators, or future perpetrators A.K. The boys.

Just a wild thought. How many times can a girl become pregnant in a year? On the contrary, how many girls can a rogue boy in the society, school, or village impregnate in a year? Why do we just follow popular ideas without questioning them? We should ask ourselves: is this holistic? What do we aim to achieve?  It is time to question some of the proposed interventions. They seem to ‘wash the shoes’ while leaving the foot stinking. We need sustainable interventions that tackle the root causes of social ills. We do not need popular semantics driven by greed and the urge to remain relevant.

It is high time to embrace meaningful concretion of interventions with communities. We should not stage manage concretion or rubber stamp what was decided under the A.C in conference rooms. The community knows the cure to what is ailing them. All we need to do is give them a genuine opportunity to speak up. They can then give us pointers to the right direction. Otherwise, as long as we go with predetermined minds we have a long way to go.
