Positive masculinity is slowly becoming a buzz word. But what does it mean? – In layman’s language it would mean building on characteristics associated with traditional masculinity like – strength, courage, determination, perseverance, intelligence, while neglecting the negative aspects, such as aggression, domination and violence.
Simply put positive masculinity is not just about crying and showing emotions but:
- Is about Empathy, respect, compassion and caring. It’s about men showing up differently
- It’s not about redefining strength but encouraging dignity other than dominance, moving from control to compassion.
- It encourages men to be protectors not perpetrators, to build rather than break
- Teaches men to lead with empathy instead of Ego
- It champions accountability, equality and respect
- Teaches boys that being a man is not about how loud or controlling you are but how safe others feel around you
