Too often, gender equality spaces celebrate “ready-made” allies, men who speak well, attend conferences, and understand the language of inclusion. But this focus misses a critical truth: allies are not born; they are built.
If we are serious about change, we must stop chasing the finished product and start investing in the process.
Real transformation does not happen in conference halls or hotel meeting rooms. It happens in everyday spaces, among boda boda riders, in communities affected by cattle rustling, among men battling alcoholism, and even among young men used as political goons. These are not the typical faces of allyship, but they are central to the reality of gender inequality.
Ignoring them does not protect progress, it delays it or postpones the hard realities.
The uncomfortable truth is that the men we often avoid are the ones we most need to engage. No one dreams of a drunkard, a thug, or a violent man as an ally. But these individuals are part of our society. If we want different outcomes, we must invest in reshaping the environments and experiences that produce harmful behaviours.
Allyship requires deliberate effort: mentorship, dialogue, exposure and sustained engagement. It requires meeting men where they are not where we wish they were. This work is not glamorous. It is slow, complex, and sometimes frustrating. But it is necessary.
Equally important is starting early. Boys are not born with harmful attitudes, they learn them. That means they can also learn respect, empathy, and equality. If we fail to invest in how boys are raised, we will continue trying to fix problems that could have been prevented.
We must also rethink how resources are allocated. Funding should not only support high-level discussions but also grassroots efforts that engage men and boys directly in their communities.
In the end, gender equality will not be achieved by a few polished allies. It will come when everyday men across all walks of life become part of the solution.
That kind of ally does not appear by chance. He is built.
